Pipe Stem
The metal stem is the heart and soul of the pipe, although it may
not appear to have much effect on your smoke a good pipe stem will help keep
your smoke cool. The depth of the stem into the bottle will have a definite
effect on the quality of your smoke. The deeper your pipe drops into base bottle
the more air you will have above the water line for the smoke to mix with and
cool.

Lose or Clip on trays. Preference seems to be deemed by how the tray is
used. Some people like to drop the dust collected from the charcoal onto the
tray and them empty the tray when they change the tobacco in the bowl. Some
people are happy just to use the tray in case some charcoal or dust drops off
which the tray will catch.

A wide tray is also good to help prevent charcoal falling onto your carpet.
Air Valve – A well
machined valve helps expel the smoke with less effort when the smoke becomes to
strong. A ball bearing is found in the air valve, this will need replacing when
it becomes rusty or you may experience difficulty in expelling the extra smoke.

The other area to look at in a pipe is the fitting where the hose attaches.
Again a well machined hose attachment will mean a better tighter fit for your
hose.
